THE VAMPIRES OF BLOODY ISLAND

From Allin Kempthorne, the Writer and Director of “The Vampires of Bloody Island”

Back in 2007, while playing small parts in TV and film, my wife Pamela and I found ourselves writing the script for a vampire comedy—though at the time, we had no idea just how far down the rabbit hole (or should I say crypt?) we were about to go. What started as a few tongue-in-cheek sketches quickly grew into a full-fledged gothic romp fuelled by our shared love of old vampire movies, outrageous characters, and an irreverent sense of humour. Armed with passion, persistence and an old cobweb covered coffin that wouldn't even fit in our car, we set out to create The Vampires of Bloody Island—a film that would turn into a cult favourite, starring none other than Pamela herself as the fabulously fearsome Vampire Queen Morticia de’Ath.

We weren’t aiming for just another low budget vampire flick. We wanted to create a gloriously gothic, laugh-out-loud love letter to the classic Hammer horror films with a wickedly modern twist! Shot on windswept Cornish cliffs and in crumbling castles that practically oozed atmosphere, this film was a true labour of love, madness, and gallons of fake blood. Despite our low filming budget we sourced castles, boats, explosions, a huge vampire army and wide sweeping aerial shots from a helicopter.

At the heart of it all is my incredibly talented wife, Pamela Kempthorne, who sinks her teeth into the role of Vampire Queen Morticia de’Ath with deliciously dark flair. You may recognise her from Harry Potter or Shaun of the Dead, but here she reigns supreme—commanding a vampire army, concocting sinister alchemical experiments, and delivering one-liners sharper than her fangs.

Behind the scenes, we were a small but fiercely passionate team. We wrote, directed, edited and acted in the film ourselves—often swapping roles between takes. Our soundtrack features some of the best goth bands from around the world, including Inkubus Sukkubus and Theatres des Vampires, giving the film a pulse-pounding, coffin-rattling energy.

The film had a small cinema release and was released on DVD in the UK in August 2009, following six months later with a smaller distribution in the USA. Although very much a low budget film it gathered a lot of media attention and the critics called it “a laugh-packed send-up of every vampire film you’ve ever loved” and “a real cult classic”.

"Laugh-out-loud funny with a kick-ass soundtrack. Could attain Rocky Horror style cult status."
